Rani and West Dhaka Tailoring Project
The Garments Industry has transformed Bangladesh. It is true that wages are low but with two or three from one family all working, their joint income brings a level of security they could not previously have hoped for. Entry into a garments job can be determined by having some basic knowledge and experience. Rani introduces young women to the sewing machines and the skills of cutting the cloth and sewing cloths for children and women.
However, these ladies are not just trainees for Maya. As an older women she cares for them, advises them on family matters, and listens to their struggles.
Not all join a factory. Others sew at home, making clothes for their own family and neighbours and thus supplementing their incomes.
